Many bacterial
infections are beginning to defy all
antibiotics. Doctors and hospitals are finding
bacteria more and more difficult to eradicate as
resistant strains are developing. The use of
stronger, more toxic antibiotics is not an
option. These concentrated doses are dangerous
to humans, many of whom are already allergic or
reactive to these drugs.
In the last 20
years, a broad resistance to antibiotics has
begun to emerge. The bacteria can transfer genes
among themselves, and experts only expect the
resistance to grow. The worst-case scenario
could be a super-microbe immune to all
antibiotics that would wreak havoc world
wide.
The 1994 Newsweek cover story
titled "Antibiotics, the End of the Miracle
Drugs?" sums it up, "The rise of drug-resistant
germs is unparalleled in recorded history.
Penicillin and tetracycline lost their power
over staph back in the 1950s and 60s. Another
antibiotic, methicillin, provided a back-up for
a while, but methicillin- resistant staph (MRSA)
is now common in hospitals and nursing homes
worldwide . . . . Trying to cripple the
bacteria"s defenses . . . will not do much more
than buy us five or ten years. A better strategy
might be to abandon antibiotics altogether in
favor of different kinds of drugs.
Staph
bacteria, (the leading cause of infection in
hospitals) now has 2800 different strains. It
can quickly change genes to turn into stronger,
more dangerous germs that resist antibiotics.
New diseases are emerging, and older ones, such
as tuberculosis, are quickly evolving into
strains that are resistant.
Doctors admit
that the medical profession is losing the battle
against germs. The question is not if but when
the next deadly plague will appear.

effective way to help your immune system win the
fight against these foreign invaders.
